Meg Tuthill wins DFL endorsement!

Today, the 10th Ward DFL Convention endorsed Meg Tuthill for Minneapolis City Council. Tuthill won the endorsement on the convention’s second ballot, receiving 62.6% of the vote. Nearly 200 delegates attended the convention.

Tuthill said that she was “delighted” to win the endorsement. “I am humbled and honored by the support I have received from DFL delegates and the community. I thank the delegates for their support and confidence. I pledge to work hard to win this seat in the November election.”

“I ran a grass roots campaign for the endorsement from the beginning” Tuthill said. “I encouraged residents to attend their precinct caucuses, and I contacted all the delegates to win their support.”

Tuthill, who did not seek the endorsement of elected officials who do not live in the 10th Ward, said that she has already received calls from elected officials who had endorsed her opponent, offering to help her campaign.

Tuthill said that she would reach out to her opponent’s supporters to unify the DFL Party in the 10th Ward campaign.

With her husband Dennis, Tuthill – a 40-year resident of the 10th Ward – owns and operates Tuthill’s Balloon Emporium, a fixture on Hennepin Avenue. She is a passionate supporter of neighborhoods and has a long history as a neighborhood activist.

Tuthill said that her top priorities, if elected, will be strengthening public safety, supporting public education, and reinforcing city finances. She also pledged to return open, responsive, inclusionary constituent relations and service to the 10th Ward.

Tuthill is also endorsed by the DFL Feminist Caucus and Stonewall DFL.

Tuthill says “The campaign for the November election begins tomorrow!”

Jeanine Estimé, a 15 year resident of South Minneapolis is entering the
City Council Ward 8 race. She will be seeking the Green Party
endorsement. Jeanine, who currently serves on the Steering Committee of
the 5th Congressional District Green party, holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts
from Metropolitan State University.

According to the City of Minneapolis website, Ward 8 has the third highest
number of foreclosures in the City of Minneapolis, effecting over 800
homes. Estimé sees concerns that residents have, especially those that
rent, are not addressed and opportunity to alleviate worries is greatly
needed. “As a single parent and a renter, I understand the growing needs
of the community and the much needed visibility for a strong voice in City
Hall,” Estimé explains.

Estimé is campaigning on issues of youth programming, environmental
sustainability, housing, and civil rights. Her vision includes:

* Eliminating cuts to the Minneapolis Civil Rights Department
* Preventing youth violence by using private and public funds to
create youth programming
* Support businesses that will produce alternative energy use
* Encourage new businesses, such as Trader Joes, to open in North
Minneapolis.

Estimé continues to say, “There is a great potential to bring more
resources to our ward, and I am encouraged by the support I have received
to run.”

Jeanine Estimé is announcing her candidacy on 4:30PM Wednesday April 22,
2009 at Sabathani Community Center Board Room, Room 218.

Meg Tuthill for 10th Ward City Council!
In November, Meg Tuthill – longtime 10th Ward homeowner, small businesswoman, community activist, and DFL supporter – declared her candidacy for the Minneapolis City Council. In her announcement, Tuthill said that, as Council Member, she would “engage citizens in a dialogue about the city so we can work together to produce the best ideas for our community.”

Deep roots in the 10th Ward
Meg and her husband Dennis have lived in Minneapolis for nearly 40 years. They raised three children and sent them to Minneapolis public schools. The Tuthills have run their family business – Tuthill’s Balloon Emporium, a neighborhood fixture at 25th and Hennepin – for 30 years. At her business,
she has focused on customer service, experience that will be invaluable in serving the residents of the 10th Ward.

Community activist
Meg Tuthill was a community activist long before that was hip. She has served as founding member of her neighborhood association, zoning advocate, recycling pioneer, school volunteer, police-citizens committee member, park volunteer, and Girl Scout leader. Tuthill has been a delegate to many DFL conventions and has volunteered on the campaigns of countless DFL candidates.
